End of an Era

It’s the end of an era for fruit and veggie wholesaler Malcom Hicks, who closed down his father’s 95-year-old business as he retired last week. Harold Hicks Ltd was a family firm from Oxford that provided fruits and vegetables for the area, including 10 of the Oxford University colleges.

“I’m sad in as much as we are closing an era,” said Hicks. “We have had some wonderful customers. It’s been a joy to serve them.”

Harold Hicks Ltd was set up in the mid-1920s by Malcom’s grandparents who were also greengrocers. As a boy, Malcolm and his two brothers were involved with the business, though ultimately Malcolm took the lead in 1987 when their father passed. Unfortunately, with no children Malcolm had no person in place to continue the company.
