James Olan Hutcheson

Founder

James Olan Hutcheson founded REGENERATION. Today, he brings over 40 years of hands-on experience managing and consulting family businesses. Specifically, Jim dedicates his work to enhancing shareholder value and revolutionizing communication within family enterprises. As a result, this focus has made him a trusted authority in corporate governance and succession planning.

Over the years, Jim has successfully advised over 250 families across diverse industries. Interestingly, his expertise stems from navigating his own family’s business dynamics. Jim started at Olan Mills, Inc. in 1976 as a part-time telemarketer. Eventually, he rose through the ranks to become President of Olan Mills Studios. However, in 1995, he left to establish REGENERATION. During his tenure at Olan Mills, the organization expanded to 15,000 employees. Furthermore, it opened over 1,000 locations across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Ultimately, under Jim’s leadership, the company achieved staggering annual growth exceeding 27 percent.

Beyond his practical experience, Jim prioritizes academic excellence. He holds degrees in Psychology and Sociology, an MBA, and a master’s in behavioral economics from the London School of Economics. Later, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws. In addition, Jim is a respected member of The Family Firm Institute (FFI). He served on the FFI board of directors and chaired the annual conference. Accordingly, his peers named him an FFI Fellow and awarded him the Richard Beckhard Practice Award.

Meanwhile, Northwood University recognized his leadership with the Outstanding Business Leader Award. He also served as a Trustee and Chairman of the Board of Governors for the university. Moreover, Jim and REGENERATION won the Greater Texas Business Ethics Award and reached the finals for The North American Business Ethics Award. Throughout his career, Jim has held board positions or advised over 45 enterprises. In fact, he even stepped in as interim CEO for three successful companies.

Alongside his consulting work, Jim is a sought-after speaker and prolific writer. He contributes to numerous publications and appears frequently in the media. For instance, over 200 national and international outlets have featured his insights, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNBC, and PBS. Previously, Jim held editorial roles at Nation’s Business, Financial Planning, and BusinessWeek.com. Currently, he serves as a contributing editor for Family Business Magazine and Families in Business.

As an extension of his thought leadership, Jim has authored two influential books. These include “Portraits of Success: 9 Keys To Sustaining Value In Any Business” and “The Family Business Road Map To Peace Of Mind.” Additionally, he contributes his expertise to the Family Business Magazine handbook series.

Outside of the office, Jim divides his time between Dallas, Texas, and Telluride, Colorado. As an adventurous spirit, he enjoys hiking, reading, and exploring the world. Above all, Jim cherishes time with his wife, his grandchildren, and his labradoodle, Gracie.
